Families from around the City of Birmingham came out on Saturday to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month with the nation. Local survivors were on hand to share their experiences and offer words of wisdom. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. The organization also expects around 298,000 new cases this year alone. The event was hosted by Tracy Murray and Tracy’s Treasure Daycare. Murray, who has two locations in the city felt the need to host the event to put emphasis on how vital it is to get preventive care. “The purpose of this event was to inform individuals about the importance of mammograms and preventive care. It’s the number one killer in our community and I just want everyone to be more knowledgeable for a better lifestyle.” Families, along with kids from both daycare locations were present and also participated in the event. “It was everything to see the people come out and take time from their busy schedules. This lets me know that people are listening, engaged, enthusiastic and empowered”. Murray says she plans to host the event each year.
